The Black Bay Dark is the one everybody assumes they already know the answer for. All-black watch, so a black strap, obviously. Done.
That is the wrong answer, and this guide is mostly about why.
Strap size and fit guide (the name will trick you here)
Your Tudor Black Bay Dark (Ref. 79230DK) has a 41mm case and a 22mm lug width.
On Helvetus product pages, select "Heritage Black Bay". The Dark is a 79230-generation Black Bay — the same case as the blue and burgundy 79230 references — so it takes the same selection they do.
Now the trap, and it is a nasty one because it plays on the watch's own name:
Do not select "Black Bay 41 Monochrome" just because your watch is monochrome. That option exists for a different reference. Your Black Bay Dark is a Heritage-generation 41, and "Heritage Black Bay" is the one cut for it. The Black Bay name has covered several generations over the years and they are not all the same width, so picking by how the name sounds is how people end up with a strap that will not sit properly at the lugs.

What the Black Bay Dark is
Tudor showed the Dark in 2016 and built it until around 2021, which makes it the only watch in this series you cannot walk into a boutique and buy. It is a standard 41mm Heritage Black Bay — snowflake hands, domed sapphire, screw-down crown, 200m of water resistance — with black PVD coating over the whole steel case, bezel and bracelet.
Inside is the Calibre MT5602, chronometer certified, with a silicon balance spring and around 70 hours of reserve.
The dial is black with silver-tone hands and markers, and the bezel carries a silver dive scale with one small detail that turns out to matter a lot: a luminous dot inside a red triangle at 12 o'clock. On a watch with no other colour anywhere, that little red triangle is the entire palette.
Tudor sold it on the PVD bracelet, on aged black leather, and with a fabric strap in the box in the earlier years.
The thing nobody tells you: black straps make this watch look bigger
Here is the counterintuitive bit, and it is the most useful thing in this article.
Everyone assumes black is slimming. On most watches it is. On the Black Bay Dark it does the opposite, and the reason is simple: there is no visual break anywhere on the watch. Case, bezel, dial and bracelet are all the same matte black. Put a black strap on it and the whole assembly — strap, case, strap — reads as one continuous dark mass running across your wrist. Your eye never finds an edge, so it never registers where the watch stops and the strap starts, and the object reads as longer and heavier than it actually is.
This is not theoretical. The most common criticism of the Dark from people who have worn it is that it feels chunkier than its 41mm suggests, and reviewers put that down to the thick lugs and slab-sided case. An all-black bracelet compounds exactly that problem.
Put a strap on it in almost any other colour and the case suddenly gets an outline. The eye finds the boundary at the lugs, reads the case as 41mm and stops there, and the watch shrinks. It is the single biggest wearability improvement available on this reference, and it costs less than a service.
So the rule for this watch runs against every instinct: break up the black, do not extend it.
There is a second, smaller point worth knowing. PVD is a coating rather than a material, and the places it wears first are edges that rub — which on a PVD bracelet means every link, against every other link, all day. Wearing the watch on a strap for most of the week is the easiest way to slow that down. It is not the main reason to buy a strap here, but it is a real one.
The best strap colours for the Black Bay Dark
Grey — the hero, and the one that actually solves the problem. Grey is the answer because it breaks the black without introducing a colour the watch does not have. You get a clean boundary at the lugs, the case reads as its actual size, and the whole watch looks more considered rather than just darker. It also picks up the silver dive scale on the bezel and the silver-tone hands, so it connects to something rather than sitting on top of the watch. Brown — the one that softens it. The Dark can read a little severe, and brown is the fastest way to make it feel like a watch rather than a piece of equipment. Orange — the one for people who bought a stealth watch and then got bored of stealth. Maximum contrast, and on a fully blacked-out dive watch it looks properly deliberate rather than loud. Orange against matte black is a combination that comes straight out of dive and safety equipment, so it suits the Dark's character instead of fighting it, and it is about as far as you can push the boundary argument above. Getting the order right
Colour first, then select "Heritage Black Bay". Not "Black Bay 41 Monochrome", however well that describes your watch. Not "Black Bay Bronze", which is a 43mm case at a different width.
